What is rhyming?
Rhyming helps children develop the skills they need to be successful in reading and spelling. The definition of a rhyme is when two different words end with the same sound.

For children to begin recognizing rhymes they must first understand what same and different mean. To work on this skill, have the child do sorting activities.
For example, sort different objects by size, shape, or color.
Once accomplished, they are ready to move onto conversations about same and different. Ask the child questions such as, how are the objects the same and not the same?
Parents should point out to the child what is same and different between two words that rhyme. The parent should explain why the two words rhyme.
EXAMPLE
Once children start to understand what rhyming is then they can be asked recognition questions throughout reading.
For example, “do hat and see rhyme? Do bee and see rhyme?”
