During my time at GVSU, I completed an Honors college research project. I decided to center my honor’s project on dialogic reading interventions because of my time spent completing research with Dr. Cara Singer on how SLP’s use bibliotherapy as a form of intervention. This experience inspired me to create a captivating children’s book, focused on dialogic reading, pre-literacy development, and andragogy. This initiative reflects my commitment to innovative approaches that enhance emergent literacy skills.
An interactive children’s book that includes instructions that guide parents on how to efficiently read with their child(ren) to build important pre-literacy skills like rhyming and blending, the two most basic skills needed to become a great reader.
My research experiences formed a new passion for literacy. I decided to join the K-12 GVSU Literacy Tutoring program where I enhanced comprehension and reading accuracy for K-4 students by implementing dialogic reading strategies and enhancing phonological awareness. My role as an assessor for a literacy tutoring program allowed me to utilize Reading A-Z. Running Record, Acadience Benchmark, and Words Their Way assessments to evaluate students. This experience honed my skills in assessing and tailoring interventions to meet the unique needs of each learner.
Another research program that I actively contributed to was GVSU’s Stuttering in Pediatrics and Adults Lab. I collected valuable data on both children and caregivers by administering assessments to children and conducting case history interviews with caregivers. The research provided valuable insights into attitudes toward stuttering.
During my time at MSU, I had the opportunity to learn from Dr. Scott Yaruss, a renowned professor and leading researcher in the field of stuttering. For more research information, click here.
Through these experiences, I have cultivated a rich understanding of the intricacies within the field of Speech-Language Pathology. My ongoing pursuit of knowledge and dedication to evidence-based practices underscores my commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of those I serve.
I accepted two part-time positions at private practices as a
Clinical-Fellow Speech-Language Pathologist.
I work full-time at Speech Unbound as a CCC-SLP. I love the team and community!
